Leadership Reading List

These are just a few of the books that have had an influence on me and my thinking about leadership. They’re in no particular order.

What books have influenced you?

Drop me a note.

The Servant as Leader, Robert K. Greenleaf

The seminal work that started servant leadership as a better way to think about and act as a leader. Greenleaf explains the skills be developed as a servant-leader; awareness, foresight and listening; and the differences between coercive, manipulative, and persuasive power.

Love is Just Damn Good Business, Steve Farber

Do what you love in the service of people who love what you do. Farber's LEAP model of Extreme Leadership stands is rooted in Love, Energy, Audacity and Proof.

Mastering Leadership, Robert J. Anderson and William A. Adams

A powerful and helpful framing for modeling specific leadership qualities and what they accurately call the Five Levels of Leadership: Egocentric, Reactive, Creative, Integral, and Unitive.

Leaders Eat Last, Simon Sinek

"The leaders of great organizations do not see people as a commodity to be managed to help grow the money. They see the money as the commodity to be managed to help grow their people."

Sinek, Simon. Leaders Eat Last Deluxe (p. 21). Penguin Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.

Battle Ready Leadership, Jack Carroll

How to lead other leaders

•       Relinquish some control

•       Empower team leaders

•       Promote a knowledge-sharing culture

•       Show respect

•       Be honest and transparent

Carroll, Jack. Battle Ready Leadership Handbook: Leadership Lessons From Gettysburg For Your Business . Quick Step Publishing. Kindle Edition.

It's About Time: How to Do More of What Matters in the Time You Have, McBride & Gregg

 R. Shawn McBride and Shannon J. Gregg lead readers on a new path to effective time management and productivity with a holistic approach to achieving balance in work and life. The authors are busy professionals who have taken control of their time.

Crossing the Chasm, Geoffrey Moore

30 years on and Moore's advice to tech startups still holds up.

Selling to VITO, Anthony Parinello

I've still never read a better book on strategic and professional selling.

Good to Great and Built to Last, Jim Collins

These two books should be required reading for every college student regardless of their major. There are life lessons along with leadership lessons to be learned from Collins.

Why Smart Executives Fail, Sydney Finkelstein

Another book that ought to be mandatory reading, especially for those who think the ultimate reward in business is wealth at any price.

Let's talk about you and your business.
